The Alfa Romeo RZ Coachwork by Zagato
Following up with a long lasting tradition of building special-bodied Alfa Romeos, Zagato unveiled the outrageous SZ at the 1989 Geneva Salon. Originally named ‘ES-30’, the cutting-edge looking two-seater coupé eschewed the rounded styling and aluminium-alloy coachwork hitherto associated with Zagato’s high-performance Alfas in favour of an angular bodyshell crafted in lightweight plastic – alloy roof excepted – and bonded to the floorpan of the existing Alfa 75.
Powering the SZ to its highly respectable 245 km/h top speed was 206 bhp version of Alfa’s superb 3.0-litre four cam V6, widely recognized as one of the finest power plants of recent times.
It today turns out to be a much sought after and the considerably rarer RZ spider version even more so.
Serial number 145.
Finished in the highly desirable Giallo Fly with Black hide to the interior, this exceptional example is number 145 in the series and was delivered new by Italian authorized dealer Var Auto and was at the same time displayed at the firm’s showroom in Beinette in the province of Cuneo, Italy. The car was kept virtually brand new for the next 9 years with less than 120 km showing before passing to a German Alfa Romeo specialists on behalf of a British client, Mr Andrew Ramsey, and was shipped to the United Kingdom.
Andrew Ramsey kept the car until the second last owner bought it, with very reasonable mileage. It was subsequently purchased by the actual owner and shows today just over 12,100 km from new.
This superbly presented Alfa Romeo RZ Zagato is supplied with extensive documentation, including workshop manuals, MOT registrations, wallet with handbooks (including the original Alfa Romeo pen), and its leather bound factory Certificado di Collaudo (Certificate of Authenticity).
